I believed I had lost everything when my ex betrayed me and wed another woman. Then, his mother sent me a red dress for their wedding, along with a revelation that transformed everything. I pursued her, not him. I never anticipated uncovering the truth or finally mustering the courage to prioritize myself.
If you wish to truly grasp the essence of heartbreak, imagine opening your door to find a velvet-wrapped box adorned with your ex’s mother’s handwriting, months after he shattered your trust.
The package arrived on my doorstep on a Thursday morning. I hesitated before picking it up. The last time I had seen Elena in person, she had embraced me tightly.
“Do not lose sight of the goodness within you, Micaela.”
Even after Mark and I had a tumultuous breakup, I had reached out to her just to hear her voice.
Inside the box lay an invitation, Mark and Sarah, all in glossy print with gold script, his name next to hers as if nothing had ever come between us. However, what truly captivated me was the dress underneath.
It was a vivid crimson silk, so striking that it pained me. It featured a sweetheart neckline and was the type of dress one would wear only if they desired to be noticed.
My phone was in my hand before I could talk myself out of calling. Elena answered on the first ring.
“Did you receive it?” she inquired, breathless and almost urgent.
“Elena, what are you thinking? Do you want me to attend his wedding in this?” I attempted to laugh, but it came out unsteady.
She did not laugh. “Wear it, Micaela. Please. Trust me, there is a reason. I discovered it in my guest room after Sarah’s visit. I just needed to confirm.”
“Elena, this will create a scene. It is his wedding… You know how people can be. Someone will twist this, turning it into something it is not.”
She fell silent for a moment.
“Mic, I cannot explain everything over the phone,” she said, her voice tense. “I need you there, where she cannot alter what she did in front of witnesses.”
I sank onto the couch, gazing at the dress. “Are you alright? Is there something you are not disclosing to me?”
“I am fine, love,” she replied too quickly. “I just cannot allow her to take this as well. Please. You will understand soon.”
